چکیده

This article addresses the central impediment to the wide-spread exploration of the potential of Local Composition Control (LCC) in Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF), and presents a Feature-Based Design (FBD) approach for modeling complex components with LCC. The approach will allow the designer to simultaneously edit geometry and composition until a satisfactory result is attained. The concise and machine-general procedural representation will be maintained throughout the design process and will be evaluated for the purpose of visual feedback to the designer and for post-processing, i.e., the creation of machine-specific instructions for fabrication.

Modeling and Designing Functionally Graded Material Components for Fabrication with Local Composition Control

Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) processes have demonstrated the ability to produce parts with locally controlled composition. In the limit, processes such as 3D Printing can create parts with composition control on a length scale of 100 m. To exploit this potential, new methods to model, exchange, and process parts with local composition control need to be developed. An approach to modeling a ...

Solid Freeform Fabrication for Autonomous Manufacturing of Complete Mobile Robots

Solid freeform fabrication (SFF) allows 3D-printing of arbitrarily shaped structures, directly from computer-aided design (CAD) data. SFF has traditionally focused on printing passive mechanical parts. Advances in this technology and developments in materials science make it feasible to begin the development of a single, compact, robotic SFF system – including a small set of materials which can...

Integration of a Solid Freeform Fabrication Process into a Feature-Based CAD System Environment

The design and implementation of a feature-based software system for the Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) process is discussed. For the SFF process to be an effective design tool in a manufacturing system, the tight integration of the process into a feature-based CAD system is desired. A feature set for determining the optimal part orientation is identified, and the procedure is described.

Representation and Processing of Heterogeneous Objects for Solid Freeform Fabrication

Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF), also referred to as Layered manufacturing (LM), is a new method of fabrication. Unlike conventional manufacturing (e.g., CNC machining), where a part is fabricated by selectively removing material from a workpiece, in SFF, a part is built by depositing material, layer-by-layer, under computer control. Solid Freeform Fabrication is in principle a 2.5D process st...

Solid Freeform Fabrication with Local Composition Control

One of the great potential benefits offered by solid freeform fabrication (SFF) technology is the ability to create parts that have composition variation within them. Such local composition control (LCC) has the potential to create new classes of components. Material composition can be tailored within a component to achieve local control of properties; for example, index of refraction, electric...
